Coaching and Mentoring
We provide a coaching, mentoring and counselling service to support individuals and teams to improve their performance.
Coaching - facilitating
Coaching is the process of improving the performance of someone (or a team) to get better at what they are already good at. The Coach may not have any greater skill, experience or ability than the individual being coached but uses a process such as the ‘grow model’ to improve the performance of the individual or team. This technique is often used in sports where the athlete may already be a world champion and at the top of their game.
Mentoring - advising
The word Mentor is the name of a character in Homer's Odyssey; he was the overseer of Odysseus' son, Telemachus. In today’s world the term ‘Mentor’ has come to mean a trusted advisor, friend, teacher or a wise person. If we look back through history there are many examples of helpful mentoring relationships: Hayden and Beethoven, Freud and Jung, Socrates and Plato. Mentoring is a fundamental form of human development where one person invests time, energy and personal know-how in assisting the growth and ability of another person. Fundamentally mentoring is a trusted relationship between individuals where one seeks the advice of the other vastly more experienced person.
Counselling - listening
Counselling is helping someone to solve their own problems by giving them an ear and allowing the individual to talk about their troubles to someone who will advise them in an unbiased way. The counsellor needs a high degree of communication skill in all of its spectrums, verbal, emotional and kinaesthetic.
Coaching, Mentoring and Counselling are often confused with each other as the boundary between each discipline is very blurred. Coaching is often associated with the development of athletes and sports talent, but executive coaching is becoming recognised as an effective approach to improving leadership effectiveness within organisations.
